This month’s Picture Perfect photographer is the Portuguese Hélio Ramos (62) who lives in Olhão, which is also the city he was born in. “My first experience with photography dates back to 1975/1976, when my parents gave in to my wishes and bought me a camera, a Yashica Electro 35.” Hélio soon got the hang of taking pictures and in 1981 he landed his first job as a professional photographer.

“My passion for photography can be explained as having a constant need to take pictures,” explains Hélio. Although he photographs “a little of everything”, he’s especially fascinated by nature and architecture. A lot of his pictures have been featured in tourist brochures. “Working for tourism is a large part of what I do and allows me to show people the beauty of Portugal.”

Hélio about photography in the Algarve: “Despite the fact that it’s a small region, the Algarve has a huge diversity of themes, and a unique light. Because of this diversity, it’s difficult for me to choose a favourite place. However, I spend a lot of time in the mountains on the Costa Vicentina and I also love the hustle and bustle of the fishermen.”

Aerial photography:

This month’s Picture Perfect shows the Ria Formosa area between Ilha de Tavira and Ilha da Armona seen from above. It was taken on a Phase One P 65+ with a 110mm lens. Settings: f/11, 1/640 sec, ISO: 200. Like this pic? See more on Hélio’s website.

Want to try and make a perfect picture like this one as well? Here are Hélio’s top three tips:

1. Don’t be afraid to fly and make sure you feel comfortable in the aircraft.

2. Try to fly in the first and last hours of the day and when possible, go up when the atmosphere is clean.

3. It’s important that the pilot understands what exactly the photographer wants, so make sure to communicate this well.
