Take the kids

It’s holiday time! Every year, thousands of tourists celebrate their summer holidays in the Algarve. Vacation is always better when the kids are having fun, so here’s an overview of things to do with the whole family.

Animals

Are your children delighted by the geckos here in the Algarve? And were they devastated when they heard that Boomer the dog had to stay in the kennel for two whole weeks? Here’s how to have fun with animal lovers.

Horse riding

Girls love horses and boys do too. In a beautiful wild countryside close to Moncarapacho, former competition rider Heleen the Jong teaches a sensible and respectful approach to horses. In her riding school there’s a happy horse for everyone, from the cute Bonita to the feisty Dancer.

Lessons are catered for all levels, from absolute beginners to experienced riders in both jumping and dressage. Riding caps are provided and both lessons and hacks can be booked by phone. Call Heleen on 965400159.

Zoo Lagos

Bobcats, ocelots, pelicans, monkeys, wallabies and peacocks. These are just a few of the over 120 species of animals you’ll encounter in the Parque Zoológico de Lagos. It’s not a massive zoo with lions and elephants, but rather a charming small-scaled place where you can get close to the animals.

Children will love the walk-through bat enclosure and the small petting farm where goats and pigs can be fed by hand. For more information, visit www.zoolagos.com: Want to win tickets to Zoo Lagos? Check out our August competitions.

Zoomarine

“No darling, we can’t take the nice dolphins home.” Prepare to say this to your children at least five times when going to Zoomarine (in Guia) as the dolphin shows are the highlight of this park. (There’s even a possibility of interacting with dolphins -not included in the entrance price-, see page 14).

However, your kids will also love the bird demonstrations, Pirate show and the aquarium. Zoomarine even has its own beach with water slides. What more could you want? For more information, visit: www.zoomarine.pt. Want to win tickets to Zoomarine? Check out our August competitions.

Water

Are your kids always splashing about? On a hot summer day, take them to a water park, where entertainment comes in the form of slides and rapid rivers. There are three main waterparks in the Algarve.

Aquashow Park

Located in Quarteira, the main attractions of this waterpark include the white falls and the wild snake thrill ride in the dark (pictured). New for 2015 is the biggest free fall of Europe with slides of 32 metres high and 129 metres long.

Slide & Splash

Based in Lagoa, this water park offers big slides and a crazy river area. Apart from water themed activities, it also holds birds of prey and reptile shows. For more information, visit: www.slidesplash.com

Aqualand

Highlight of this water park in Alcantarilha is the banzai, a ride where you skim across the water on a board from a 23 metres high slide. Too exhilarating for your taste? Float around on rubber rings in the river ride. For more information, visit: www.aqualand.pt

Action

Are your kids action men and women in the making? Then wear the little thrill seekers and daredevils out with one of these action packed options. Bonus: you’ll be able to enjoy a quiet evening to yourselves when they’re fast asleep after an adrenaline-filled day.

Karting Almancil

Wannabe rally drivers should head to Karting Almancil where the track is a replica of a former F1 circuit in Brazil. Cars on offer range from small electric Mini F1s to proper 390cc’s. Not keen on motorsports? Other activities include mini boats and trampolines (pictured on the cover of this month’s issue).

Pirate boat trip

Shipmates ahoy! Come aboard the historical pirate ship Leãozinho in Albufeira for a sailing trip around the Algarve coastline. Discover rock formations and white sandy beaches – maybe you’ll even spot dolphins on the way.

Budget

The best days out don’t need to be expensive. Save on the euros instead of on the fun and get creative. Or you could just win the entrance tickets for your favourite activity or park at Enjoy the Algarve’s August competitions.

Beach

Rockpooling, jumping in the waves, swimming, observing crabs, building a sandcastle, burying each other in the sand, searching shells, paddling, and of course splashing water on mum and dad who are working on their tan in the sun. There’s no way your children will ever get bored on the beach. Unsure of what beach will best suit your needs? Check out our beach guide in the June issue.

Walking

Nature in the Algarve varies from sandy beaches on the coast to lush mountains further inside. There are rugged cliffs, waterfalls, trails and wetlands, all to discover if you leave the car behind and continue by foot. So if the temperature drops below scorching, take a hike! Bring enough water and food and make the walk interesting for the kids by looking for little lizards, birds and unusual rocks. You can download a booklet with trails in the Algarve here.
