This month’s Picture Perfect photographer is João Bracourt (43), aka Brek, who lives close to the sea in Portimão. Many of his award-winning pictures have ended up in books and on surfing magazine covers (naturally, this one’s another shot that has made it to the cover).

João is a self-taught photographer who has been surfing for almost 30 years now. “Being a surfer really helps with surf photography as it gives you a better understanding of the ever-changing conditions in the sea. I also did a little painting, which has given me a better understanding of composition and colour.”

Although João travels around the world to get his pictures, he has a soft spot for the south of Portugal. “Even though surfwise the Algarve can be a bit fickle, and the swell here isn’t as consistent as in Indonesia or Hawaii for example, with the right conditions you still get world class waves.”

João on photography in the Algarve: “My favourite part is the Costa Vincentina, all the way from Lagos to Aljezur. It has great light and amazing scenery. I especially like the fact that the coastline there is so diverse, with a mix of microclimates, different cliffs and bays.”

Surf photography

This month’s Picture Perfect shows Portuguese surfer Alex Botelho riding a tube in Zavial. It was taken on a Nikon D300 with a 10.5mm fisheye lens (15mm in 35mm) with settings 1/1250 sec, f5, ISO 200.

  1. Know yourself, know the surfers and know the ocean.
  2. The surfers, the waves and the light are always changing, so keep on trying and work hard.
  3. Don’t try to be better, try to be different. Find a new angle, lens, or concept.
